About Rotary

with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other groups, have nearly eradicated the terrible polio virus from the face of the earth. What an accomplishment! When Rotary International first assumed this project in 1985, more than a thousand children were infected with polio every day in 125 countries. Today, through partnership, service and fundraising, only four polio endemic countries remain – Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan – with less than 2,000 cases a year;  a 99.4% reduction. This last 1% left to tackle will be the most difficult part of this journey… but that’s not all Rotarians do.

Individual Rotary Clubs make up Rotary International. It is a secular organization open to all persons regardless of race, color, creed or political preference. The purpose of the organization is to bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Members usually meet weekly for breakfast, lunch or dinner, which is a social event as well as an opportunity to organize work on their service goals.

The Peak to Peak Rotary Club, serving Nederland, Rollinsville, Black Hawk and Central City, will celebrate its 10th anniversary on February 20th, 2010. In those ten years, our local Rotarians have brought many thousands of dollars and hours into our local community and the world at large through fund raising, direct service and club membership. Rotarians are leaders in their community, either through their professions or through their service work. While many enjoy our weekly luncheons with speakers and fellowship, the purpose of our engagement is to provide support to our local community and Rotary International projects. Some of the programs Peak to Peak Rotarians have helped support are:

Financial Support to Local Libraries and Literacy Programs

Service Activities such as the Annual Duck Race in Black Hawk, Highway Cleanup projects, Peach and Seed sales

Successful fund raising for our District and International projects such as PolioPlus

Our student club, Interact, provides service to their school and beyond – from recycling programs to service with the Denver Rescue Mission along with global outreach

Support for exchange students, both at home and abroad

And much, much more

Founded by Paul Harris in 1905, Rotarians comprise a service organization 1.2 million members strong in over 33,000 clubs worldwide. Rotarians are business and professional leaders who take an active role in their communities while greatly enriching their personal and professional lives.
