The Red Men Cemetery at the top of Eureka in Central City is being decimated by overuse, with vandalism and damage to stones and greenery - The Historical Advisory Preservation Commission, in partnership with the Cities of Black Hawk and Central and the County of Gilpin, will be leading a community effort on JUNE 26th from 9 am until the job is done to get this area spruced up and protected. Our community will gather there for a bit of food and then aim to replace the old fences and install signage about the area’s history. Come and learn about the Red Men Cemetery and enjoy fellowship with your community while helping to keep it beautiful and preserve history for generations to come. For more info, send us a note.
There is so much fun stuff going on… don’t miss out! And please lend a hand to those who work so hard to keep our beautiful mountain community, well, beautiful. And remember you can visit our FaceBook page to find out what our friends are up to, too!
Megan Finnesy has done it again with her Dirty Thirty Race – but she needs a food pick up person on June 5th. And the Nederland Visitors’ Center is looking for volunteers as well.
Received in the P2P Rotary email today:
I just got this press release from our own Gilpin Public Library – we are award winning! Well, we knew that already, but now those who are handing out awards do, too. Michelle is real keen on the programs that our library puts together – they are fun, interesting, and personally enriching, and add depth and color to our community, too. It is wonderful for our library to be nationally recognized for these wonderful programs. Maybe Larry can talk more about this with us when he comes to visit on the 18th….
CHICAGO – The Public Library Association (PLA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has announced the winners of nine awards, honoring the best in public library service and innovation. The Gilpin County Public Library (GCPL) has been honored with one of these awards.
The EBSCO Excellence in Small and/or Rural Public Library Service Award honors a public library serving a population of 10,000 or fewer that demonstrates excellence in service to its community. The Gilpin County Public Library in Blackhawk, Colorado, will receive this year’s $1,000 award honoring its innovative and creative “artist-in-residence” program. Beginning in the summer of 2008, with the financial backing of the Friends of the Library, the GCPL offered a Poet-in-Residence to the community, who held a series of workshops for people of all ages on writing, reading, and appreciating poetry of many varieties. In the summer of 2009 two visual artists-in-residence were selected, who offered more than a dozen programs on art, most of which were workshops in various media. The GCPL intends to continue with a third artist-in-residence next summer, this time a musician-in-residence.
Eight other libraries and individuals from around the USA were honored with awards as well. This was the second year in a row a library in Colorado garnered the EBSCO Award, with the John C. Fremont Library District in Florence, Colorado, winning in 2009.
PLA and PLA President, Sari Feldman, along with the award sponsors, will recognize all of the award winners on Sunday, June 27, 2010 as a part of the PLA President’s Program featuring Will Shortz at the 2010 ALA Annual Conference in Washington, DC.
PLA’s core purpose is to strengthen public libraries and their contribution to the communities they serve, and its mission is to enhance the development and effectiveness of public library staff and public library services.
