A note from Cora…

June 30, 2010 By: P2PAdmin Category: Service Projects, Speakers

Cora Meneceur - Rotary Rail and Water TourA little message from Cora Meneceur of the Rotary Rail and Water Tour:

My experience with Rotary and Intelligentsia International

“At the age of 21, I left the Parisian suburbs and came to Florida to work with a Rotary International water projects committee, and to learn about U.S. non-profit organizations as part of my 6-month Masters Degree internship with Intelligentsia International. But it ended up being much more than this. Here, I discovered a real team committed to promote access to drinkable water throughout the world.

Save the Red Men Cemetery!

June 10, 2010 By: P2PAdmin Category: Call for Help, Community News, Events, Fellowship, Service Projects

The Red Men Cemetery at the top of Eureka in Central City is being decimated by overuse, with vandalism and damage to stones and greenery - The Historical Advisory Preservation Commission, in partnership with the Cities of Black Hawk and Central and the County of Gilpin, will be leading a community effort on JUNE 26th from 9 am until the job is done to get this area spruced up and protected. Our community will gather there for a bit of food and then aim to replace the old fences and install signage about the area’s history. Come and learn about the Red Men Cemetery and enjoy fellowship with your community while helping to keep it beautiful and preserve history for generations to come. For more info, send us a note.

WOW. Rail and Water Presentation a Hit

June 07, 2010 By: P2PAdmin Category: Events, P2P Lunch, Service Projects, Speakers

Cora Meneceur gave an OUTSTANDING presentation on global water projects on behalf of the District 6960 (Florida) Water Projects Committee. We learned how water projects are funded and by whom, and how the work gets done. We owe a great debt to Cora and the District 6960 WP committee for bringing this informative presentation to us. And special thanks to the Moore’s and Linda Jones for helping to make her visit comfortable and fun. Thanks to everyone for this great program!! If you would like more information on the Rotary Rail and Water Tour and their projects, please visit http://centralasiawater.org/service.php or find the Rotary Rail and Water Tour on Facebook!

Carbon Valley’s Great Raffle!

May 15, 2010 By: FireEater Category: Area Fund Raisers, Service Projects

PE Michelle (right) with Beverly Mendel, President of the Carbon Valley Rotary Club. Click the pic to see more info about their awesome raffle!

Carbon Valley Rotary Club (Firestone, Frederick, Dacono) have an awesome fund raiser going – it’s a raffle with a 10 THOUSAND DOLLAR PRIZE! Yeah, that’s awesome. They only sell 200 tickets, each ticket is $100. Do Peak Rotarians think we could pull of something similar? I like the simplicity and the big payout.  I stole a bunch of other ideas, too from their President, Beverly Mendel, while I was at the district conference. You can read more about their raffle after the jump, and then let your PE know – should we put something like this on the fund raiser list? Perhaps we could make it part of the Duck Race activities? THINK BIG, Rotarians – that’s how big things happen!

May 13th Speaker – John Burtschi and GCCI

May 07, 2010 By: P2PAdmin Category: Service Projects, Speakers

John Burtschi of the Gilpin County Citizens Initiative comes to talk about recent successes and let us know what this community group has planned for the coming year. The Gilpin County Citizens Initiative seeks to promote and encourage fire prevention through sound forest management practices. They work hand in hand with forest management agencies to help provide direction and resources to residents who want to steward our beautfiul landscape. This is a good opportunity to get some solid information on what you can do to keep, think or otherwise be a good steward to your own little patch of forest.

Community Group to Tackle Pine Beetles

April 27, 2010 By: P2PAdmin Category: Call for Help, Community News, Service Projects

Received in the P2P Rotary email today:

Hello,
My name is John Burtschi and I sit on the board of directors for the Gilpin County Citizens Initiative with Wes Isenhart.  GCCI and my 3 year old company, Mountain Pine Beetle Consultants LLC (StopTheBeetleNow.com) have started a MPB prevention project called “Force in the Forest”. This project is a grassroots volunteer effort to pro-actively attack the MPB in our home forests. We see how the current war against the beetle is not working and with our experience and knowledge we feel we must change our approach to battling the beetle before it is too late. Our first project area this year is scheduled for a large area from Black Hawk north 119 and along Clear Creek in Apex Valley(to protect the water way). Our goal is to protect the all the mountain views along the Peak To Peak Highway.
The Plan: Use pheromones and nature (topography, winds, etc.) to push the beetles into chosen areas where we will use lures and traps to kill them. We will be actively training volunteers to identify, picture and GPS coordinates of brood trees within the protected areas and coordinating “Saw Days” where trained volunteers will cut and debark those trees. Slash piles will be created and marked (GPS) for future burn (winter) or removed to county slash pile.
Most of the land in our first project area is private or BLM, some of it is NFS land. We would like present our project to The Peak To Peak Rotary in hopes that your group may help us recruit the hundreds of volunteers and help spread word of our fund raising efforts.
An volunteer organizational meeting is going to be held on May 8th at 10am the Gilpin County Barn.
I look forward to our conversations.

P2P Rotarians Taking Charge on Children’s Issues Worldwide

March 05, 2010 By: FireEater Category: Area Fund Raisers, Service Projects, Speakers

Our club knows a good thing when they see it. Caryn West and her family have dedicated themselves, in the face of much adversity, to seeing their project through to its success, and we were impressed. So much so that we have stepped up as a club to support her vision for a better world for children, for a beautiful expression of hope, for an project that aims to inspire people to action on children’s issues worldwide.

And simply for creating a great project that exemplifies the spirit of Rotary, and including Rotary in her pursuit of positive change, which is very smart. Caryn knows a good thing when she sees it, too.
