Save the Red Men Cemetery!

June 10, 2010 By: P2PAdmin Category: Call for Help, Community News, Events, Fellowship, Service Projects

The Red Men Cemetery at the top of Eureka in Central City is being decimated by overuse, with vandalism and damage to stones and greenery - The Historical Advisory Preservation Commission, in partnership with the Cities of Black Hawk and Central and the County of Gilpin, will be leading a community effort on JUNE 26th from 9 am until the job is done to get this area spruced up and protected. Our community will gather there for a bit of food and then aim to replace the old fences and install signage about the area’s history. Come and learn about the Red Men Cemetery and enjoy fellowship with your community while helping to keep it beautiful and preserve history for generations to come. For more info, send us a note.

Community Group to Tackle Pine Beetles

April 27, 2010 By: P2PAdmin Category: Call for Help, Community News, Service Projects

Received in the P2P Rotary email today:

Hello,
My name is John Burtschi and I sit on the board of directors for the Gilpin County Citizens Initiative with Wes Isenhart.  GCCI and my 3 year old company, Mountain Pine Beetle Consultants LLC (StopTheBeetleNow.com) have started a MPB prevention project called “Force in the Forest”. This project is a grassroots volunteer effort to pro-actively attack the MPB in our home forests. We see how the current war against the beetle is not working and with our experience and knowledge we feel we must change our approach to battling the beetle before it is too late. Our first project area this year is scheduled for a large area from Black Hawk north 119 and along Clear Creek in Apex Valley(to protect the water way). Our goal is to protect the all the mountain views along the Peak To Peak Highway.
The Plan: Use pheromones and nature (topography, winds, etc.) to push the beetles into chosen areas where we will use lures and traps to kill them. We will be actively training volunteers to identify, picture and GPS coordinates of brood trees within the protected areas and coordinating “Saw Days” where trained volunteers will cut and debark those trees. Slash piles will be created and marked (GPS) for future burn (winter) or removed to county slash pile.
Most of the land in our first project area is private or BLM, some of it is NFS land. We would like present our project to The Peak To Peak Rotary in hopes that your group may help us recruit the hundreds of volunteers and help spread word of our fund raising efforts.
An volunteer organizational meeting is going to be held on May 8th at 10am the Gilpin County Barn.
I look forward to our conversations.

February 01, 2010 By: P2PAdmin Category: Call for Help, Events, Networking

Michelle overbooked her Tuesday (again) and is looking to lose some weight – is anyone available to attend the Golden Rotary Club at Rolling Hills in Golden tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at 7 am?

I know it’s late notice and eeeeaaarly traveling but you never know unless you ask…

The purpose is to extend another announcement/invitation to the Golden Club to attend our event. You can pick up tickets from me or just take names and checks, or direct folks to the website for more info…

Anyone seen a blue scrapbook?

January 28, 2010 By: FireEater Category: Call for Help, Club Organization

I heard a rumor that there was a blue Rotary “scrapbook” floating around somewhere, location unknown. Anyone got any clues on where that might be?

Call for Help: Your Rotary Memories

January 20, 2010 By: P2PAdmin Category: Call for Help, Club Organization, Events

Michelle is working on the programming, scrapbook and history presentation for our club’s anniversary. Since I’m so new, I have little to go on.

If you have Rotary memories to share – a story, photos, artifacts, etc. – please contact me to get them included in our history book, and help Michelle create a good presentation for our awards program.

For personal safekeeping, all items will be electronically scanned and returned to you. You can bring items to club and I’ll bring them back the following week. Or, if you have items stored electronically such as digital photos, just bring me a disk. If you have a story to tell but don’t want to write it down, Michelle will come to you and listen. I love stories. :)

Thanks a bunch everyone. I hope that, as a newer member and with your help, that I can put together a presentation that will be special for everyone.

Top Priority: Haiti Earthquake Relief

January 14, 2010 By: FireEater Category: Call for Help, Rotary International, Service Projects

The devastation in Haiti of the last few years has been bad enough. A mag 7 earthquake near the capitol has left this nation in a state of  shock and awe. They desperately need our help.

At room for debate at the NYT, they are discussing the long term visions for that country from various perspectives. Certainly, there is time for Haitians to bring their own visions of the future to fruition, if they can make through this ordeal with their bodies and spirits intact. The Peak to Peak Rotary Club raised over $100 towards a Shelter Box deployment to the region – this just at lunch today and that is amazing. What more can we do?

Our 10th Anniversary Party will be a great success – you can contribute to that success by locating an item for the auction!

When an item is located, please send a description of the item, the donor’s name and whether the item needs to be picked up, and the minimum bid to

PeakToPeakRotary@gmail.com OR you can just leave the info in a comment on this page! How handy is that!!

Also, please send us a note if you have inquired about a donation with a business who said NO – we don’t want to bug them! Updates of auction items and donors/non-donors will be added to this post as they are received, or even more quickly if you just leave the info in the comments!!

To date we have:

A clock – from Rosalie; Coffee – from the Dory Hill Coffee Roaster; a cool framed map of Central City from 3 Brothers Printing; a Copy of Roger Baker’s book on Black Hawk – from Roger Baker…
